Hyuga Hyottoko Summer Festival

The "Hyottoko Odori" dance, which invites laughter with its humorous dancing with funny masks, is said to have been taught to the villagers by Dr. Kimiyuki Tachibana, who practiced in the Shiomi Nagata area around the beginning of the Meiji period and whose dance was based on Kagura (Shinto music and dance).

Today, the Hyuga Hyottoko Summer Festival is also held and has become a representative festival of Miyazaki Prefecture. Every year on the first Saturday in August, approximately 2,000 dancers gather from all over Japan.
